Today, David independently drives himself to work and school, maintains meaningful employment, and contributes toward his own expenses—milestones that reflect years of growth, perseverance, and support.

David has been part of the Easterseals South Florida family since middle school, and over the years he has demonstrated extraordinary personal and professional growth. When he first joined the program, he was reserved and hesitant to step outside of his comfort zone. Building confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills were significant challenges that he worked hard to overcome.

Through years of support, encouragement, career exploration opportunities, workforce readiness training, and his own determination, David steadily developed the skills needed to pursue greater independence. In 2024, he completed an internship at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where he gained valuable hands-on work experience and strengthened his communication, teamwork, and workplace skills in a professional environment.

In 2025, David achieved his long-term goal of securing competitive employment when he was hired as a Food Handler for the Adult Day Care at Civic Center. At the start of his employment, he experienced challenges with completing tasks within expected timeframes and adapting to workplace routines. Through individualized support, job coaching, ongoing observation, and workplace accommodations provided through Easterseals South Florida’s Workforce Development Program, supported by Coca-Cola funding, David was able to overcome these challenges. With consistent guidance and practice, he developed stronger time management skills, improved task completion, and increased confidence in his ability to work independently.

Through the Workforce Development Program, David continued building essential employment and life skills. He strengthened his communication, adaptability, teamwork, and professionalism while learning to work effectively with coworkers from diverse backgrounds, communicate with individuals who speak different languages, and adapt to varying work styles and expectations. These skills have been essential to his continued success and growth in the workplace.

Following his successful job placement, David participated in a Career Day event hosted by Easterseals South Florida, which encouraged him to continue exploring opportunities for growth and independence. Inspired by his increasing confidence and new responsibilities, he set a goal of earning his driver’s license. Later that year, he successfully achieved that milestone, significantly expanding his independence and allowing him to travel to work and school on his own. Obtaining his driver’s license strengthened his sense of responsibility, self-sufficiency, and confidence in his ability to navigate adult responsibilities.

His employment has also enabled him to contribute toward paying his own car insurance, further reinforcing the independence he gained after earning his driver’s license and demonstrating his growing financial responsibility.

Today, David is succeeding in school, maintaining meaningful employment, independently managing transportation, and building a future filled with confidence and purpose. His journey demonstrates the powerful impact that career exploration, workforce development support, and individualized coaching can have in helping individuals overcome barriers and achieve meaningful independence.
