Alex has over 25 years of experience in banking, primarily on the business development side, working for large international banks as well as regional and local community banks. His banking experience includes working with large multinational corporations, as well as medium-sized and small businesses across a wide spectrum of industries. This breadth of experience has afforded him a unique perspective and a specialized skill set that has contributed to his success in the various roles he has held throughout his banking career.
Alex began his banking career in the 1990s with Citibank Venezuela as a credit analyst and underwriter in the oil and gas sector. He later transitioned into a relationship manager role and ultimately became Head of Commercial Banking for the country’s Southeast region. In 2000, Alex relocated with his family to Miami, where he worked for eight years at Regions Bank, holding several leadership roles in the Miami market within the Business Banking and Middle Market segments.
In 2008, he joined local community bank TotalBank as Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking, with responsibility for the bank’s Trade Finance unit. In 2011, he joined BBVA USA as a founding member of the Miami Commercial Banking team and played an instrumental role in the growth of the start-up office, which led to his promotion as Head of Commercial Banking for the Miami market. In 2019, Alex joined First Horizon Bank to spearhead the bank’s expansion in the Miami market as Head of Commercial Banking, while also leading the implementation of the bank’s Trade Finance program for South Florida.
Alex served as a Senior Commercial Banker at Amerant Bank, where he focused on C&I finance solutions for mid-sized companies in the South Florida market. In 2025, he joined First American Bank as Commercial Lending Group Head.
Prior to his banking career, Alex worked as a production engineer in the oil and gas industry in his home country of Venezuela. In that role, he conducted financial analysis and economic feasibility studies for major oil and gas investment projects, which sparked his interest in finance and ultimately led him to pursue an MBA at the University of Iowa.
