Culinary Arts Program/High School

We are currently enrolling McKay Scholars for our Autism Spectrum Disorder Culinary Arts High School for the 2009 fall semester.

The students participate in daily classes focusing on academics necessary for them to receive a special diploma. A major aspect of the program is that every student participates in culinary training both in a classroom and in our state of the art vocational kitchen.

Each student receives an educational/vocational program tailored to their specific needs. All culinary activities are hands-on, as students learn skills such as sanitation, job preparation, store/stock room coordination and maintenance, and food preparation. A highlight of the program is that the students work on job training skills and are assigned a job coach in order to be successful on a job.

Job Coaches in our Vocational Services Department help students find and keep jobs in their fields. Our graduates have gone on to work in South Florida's restaurants and public school cafeterias.

Counseling and the guidance of social workers are available to the students. Group sessions are available to Culinary Arts students where topics such as appropriate behaviors in the workplace, healthy self-esteem and conflict management are addressed. Counseling is available on individual basis, according to need.

Culinary Arts students MUST be referred by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
